What Reiki Actually Is
Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 1900s, founded by Mikao Usui. The word itself comes from two Japanese words: Rei, which can be translated as "universal," and Ki, which means "life energy."
The Usui tradition teaches that Reiki is a natural part of who we are. It is not about religion or dogma. We are all born with this energy, and Reiki simply helps reawaken and strengthen what's already there. Reiki flows where it's needed most; you don't have to direct the process.
What I find most powerful about Reiki is that it treats the whole person, mind, body, and spirit, rather than symptoms. There is no wrong way to receive Reiki, and it can be practiced by anyone, anywhere, at any time, as long as there is a willingness to learn and an open mind.
In my experience, the emphasis on free will and informed consent is what makes Reiki especially respectful and gentle. Practitioners must always ask for permission before offering Reiki, whether in person or at a distance, and respect the answer given. Reiki respects free will, and it will not heal unless invited.
It is also essential to understand that Reiki is not a substitute for medical treatment. Instead, it complements other healing modalities by helping to bring the body's energy into balance. If you are dealing with a medical issue, I always recommend talking with your healthcare provider.
Reiki continues to amaze me with how simple yet powerful it can be. It is a way to support the body's natural healing response, promote relaxation, and help you feel more connected to yourself and the world around you. If you're curious about exploring Reiki, trust what drew you here.
FAQs
How does Reiki work?
Reiki works with the life force energy that flows through all living things. When this energy gets low or blocked, you might feel stressed, stuck, or just off balance.
Reiki helps remove these energetic blockages and restore your natural energy flow. The energy will go where it is needed most.
The energy supports your body's natural healing abilities on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level. It transcends time and space, which is why it's equally effective whether you are receiving it in person, from a distance, or even at a different time.
What happens during a Reiki session?
For in-person sessions, you will be fully clothed sitting or lying down, depending on what is most comfortable for you. Typically, the practitioner will place their hands on or hovering above different areas of your body. Each position is held for a few minutes while the energy flows.
For distance sessions, you can be anywhere you feel the most comfortable: home or office, sitting or lying down, inside or outside, it really doesn't matter. This may be over the phone or on a video call. You can elect to have your video on or off.
Keep in mind that every practitioner has their own approach, so some of the above may have some variation. What matters the most is that you feel comfortable. Be sure to advocate for yourself and speak up if anything is making your uncomfortable.
